Sicily. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. AR Tetradrachm, c. 420 BC. Obv. Charioteer driving quadriga right, holding kentron and reins; Nike flying left above, crowning charioteer. Rev. ΣY[RA]KO [Σ]ION. Head of Arethusa right, hair bound in sakkos drawn together at the top and decorated with a meander pattern above chevrons; surrounded by four dolphins. HGC 2 1322; Boehringer 689; SNG ANS 227. AR. 16.57 g. 27.00 mm. Reverse of superb style, a magnificent example of classical engraving. Minor corrosion spot on reverse, otherwise good VF. Uncertain traces of A on the sakkos : possibly by the Artist ‘A…’ the first engraver to sign his dies at Syracuse.
