Helios and Selene Countermarked on Early Augustan Sestertius

Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AE Sestertius, countermarked during the reign of Tiberius (14-37 AD). Syracuse mint (?). Obv. Obverse erased. Rev. Large S-C, traces of legend around; lunar deity standing facing, head left, wearing crescent headdress in oval countermark and radiate head of Helios right in circular countermark. Host sestertius not classifiable; c/ms Martini Pangeri 65 and 66. AE. 20.54 g. 34.00 mm. RRR. Very rare. Green brown surfaces. Host fair, c/ms VF.
